The paint coverage calculator is a free single-file HTML tool that works out litres of paint needed for a room area and number of coats for painters and homeowners. Paint buying usually fails in one of two ways: too little, which means a second trip mid-job and a visible shade difference between batches, or far too much, which is money sitting in tins. The calculator avoids both by working from the paintable area and the number of coats, using 10 square metres per litre per coat as the default, or your tin label value if it differs.
How to use it. Open paint-coverage-calculator.html in a browser, enter the paintable area, enter the number of coats, and click Calculate. Use the coverage figure from your tin label when it differs from the default, because paints do vary and the label is the manufacturer's own number for that product. Buy the rounded-up quantity the tool shows, not the exact figure, since a part tin cannot be bought and running out mid-coat is the expensive mistake. Calculate primer separately as one coat, because the tool does not include primer, and treating primer as free paint is how primer gets forgotten until the walls are already being painted.
Worked example. A homeowner is painting a room with 40 square metres of paintable wall area and plans two coats. At the default coverage of 10 square metres per litre per coat, one coat needs 4 litres and two coats need 8 litres, so she buys 10 litres in whole tins rather than exactly 8, keeping the spare litre for touch-ups. Had she guessed instead, she might have bought 5 litres, finished the first coat, and discovered mid-second-coat that the room needed nearly twice that, with the shop closed and the job half done. The calculation takes a minute; the second trip it prevents takes an evening.
