Our tool: PDF Toolkit (free)Competitor
What it doesMerge PDFs, split a PDF by page range (for example 1-3 or 1,4,5), and compress a PDF — all on your own computer.A full PDF application. Adobe's free online tool merges PDFs in a browser; splitting, editing, signing and other advanced jobs sit in the paid desktop app.
Where your files are processedLocally, on your own computer. Your documents are never uploaded anywhere. The free online merge tool uploads files to Adobe's servers (Adobe's own merge page says files are handled securely by its servers and deleted permanently unless you sign in and save them). The desktop app processes files on your computer.
CostFree in full. The online merge tool is free to use, with a sign-in needed to save, download and share the merged file (Adobe's own merge page). For the paid desktop app, check the provider's current pricing.
Limits that matterThe free version processes PDFs of up to 10 pages per job: merged files must add up to 10 pages or fewer in total, and a file being split or compressed must be 10 pages or fewer. If a file is too big, nothing is changed — the tool simply reports its page count.Adobe's own merge page states the free online merger handles up to 1,500 pages in one document and up to 100 files, each limited to 500 pages. So for large merges, Adobe's free online tool handles far bigger jobs than our tool.
What our tool does not doIt does not edit PDF text, run OCR on scanned pages, add e-signatures, fill forms, or handle large documents. It is a merge, split and compress tool only.Adobe Acrobat is a much larger product that covers editing, forms, signatures and more — features our tool does not claim to have.
Needs an account or internet? No account. No internet needed after the one-time install (Python plus one library, per the README).The free online tool needs internet and a sign-in to save and download. The desktop app is installed software.

Which one should you pick?

Pick our free PDF Toolkit when the job is small (10 pages or fewer) and you would rather keep the file on your own computer than upload it. Pick Adobe's free online merger when the job is large, or pick the paid Acrobat desktop app when you need full PDF editing, signatures or forms — jobs our tool does not do. Neither choice is wrong; they are different tools for different sizes of job.
