How to automate folder backups without cloud storage
Last updated: 31 Oct 2026
Cloud backup is convenient, but it is not the only way to keep a copy of your work — and it is not always the right one. If your client files should not be uploaded anywhere, if your internet is unreliable, or if you simply do not want another subscription, a local backup you control is a solid answer. This guide uses the free Folder Backup Zipper from The Freelancer Kit, a small tool that packs whole folders into one dated ZIP file on your own computer.
Step 1 — Install Python once. Install Python 3.8 or newer from python.org, and on Windows tick "Add python.exe to PATH" during install. This tool needs no extra libraries: it uses only Python's built-in features, so there is nothing else to install.
Step 2 — Open the tool. Download Folder Backup Zipper from its product page, unzip the download, and double-click folder_backup_zipper.py. A window opens with an Add Folder button, a folder list, a place to choose where the ZIP is saved, and a green Create Backup ZIP button.
Step 3 — Pick your folders. Click Add Folder and add each folder that matters — client work, documents, photos. You can add several folders to one backup, and files keep their folder names inside the ZIP, so many folders can share a single backup file.
Step 4 — Choose where the ZIP goes, then create it. Pick the save location, then click Create Backup ZIP. The tool packs everything into one ZIP with an automatic dated name like backup-2026-10-20_1430.zip and shows how many files and how much data were backed up. Your original folders are untouched: the tool only reads them into the ZIP, it never moves or deletes them.
Step 5 — Put the ZIP somewhere else. This is the step that makes it a real backup. Copy the ZIP to a USB drive, an external drive, or a second computer. A backup that only exists on the same computer does not protect you if that computer is lost, stolen or damaged.
Step 6 — Make it a habit. The tool does not run on a schedule, so the automation here is really a routine: run it at the end of each workday, or each Friday, and copy the new ZIP to your USB drive. Name discipline is already handled for you, because every backup is dated automatically.
Restoring is just unzipping. To get your files back, unzip the backup file — every folder comes back exactly as it was, with its original folder names. There is no account to recover, no app to reinstall first, and no download limit standing between you and your own work.
