Best free tools for freelance architects
Freelance architecture and site work runs on documents that have to be right: quantities that add up, drawings that are tracked by revision, measurements recorded on site, and changes agreed in writing before extra work starts. The tools on this page cover that paperwork, and every one of them is free in full from The Freelancer Kit — no payment, no account, no subscription.
Quantities come first. The bill of quantities template prices measured work item by item, the bar bending schedule lists reinforcement bars and calculates their details for site engineers and steel fixers, and the civil engineering Excel toolkit bundles six site calculators in one workbook — concrete, steel, brickwork, plaster, earthwork and a BOQ estimate sheet. For single estimates, the brick and block estimator works out bricks or blocks for a wall area including mortar and wastage, the concrete mix calculator works out cement, sand and aggregate quantities for a volume and mix ratio, and the paint coverage calculator works out litres of paint for a room area.
Site records are the second half of the job. The site measurement sheet records room lengths and widths and calculates areas, the site visit report records observations, photo slots and follow-up actions for engineers and site managers, and the material delivery log records every delivery with supplier, quantity and an inspected-or-not note, so a disputed delivery can be checked against a written record instead of memory.
Two tools handle the administrative side that protects a freelancer most: the drawing transmittal sheet records drawings sent, with revisions and sign-off lines, so nobody can later claim a revision was never issued; and the scope change order form records extra work with its price, new delivery date and signature lines, so nothing extra starts unsigned. The unit, area and scale converter rounds out the set with length, area and drawing-scale conversions, including marla and kanal. Each tool below links to its own product page, where you can read what it does and download it free.
